This year I vow to accept tubular wheels and all of the rewards, as well as the pains that are associated with owning these little nuggets.
There are several interesting tires out right now. But this one especially caught my attention.
Note the addition of the side knobs on a smooth file tread.

Heck Yea ! Don't you already own a pair of FMB's or was I dreaming that up? Whatchya got in mind?
I do have a set of FMB's but I glued them up to a wheelset that is a bit sub-par. I just picked up some near new Ksyrium SL tubbies from the cyclocrossworld team for $300 including skewers and wheel bags.
Now I just need to find some nice tires.
The Dugast Pipistrello looks really nice. but is a bit expensive.
nothing modern about gluing tires to the rim. what's modern is not gluing tires to a rim. but yes, tubulars are definitely the way to go for 'cross
I'll make you a killer deal on some white Dugast Pipistrellos, FMB sprints or even the Challenge sprints.
Anything to keep you off the Vittorias!
Being the peasant that I am, my knees do get weak when I hear the potent combination of "Killer" and "deal".
Molly, what do you recommend for racing in mostly New England where the courses are fast and grassy, mostly no mud, and some bumpyness?
I think these tires with the smooth tread and little nobs on the sides will work quite nicely no?
Statistics:
Mid level B-racer. 140lbs. I prefer to use large gears, and hate the spinning.
I believe that the tires in question, the Vittorias, come in white. I have also heard that they are prone to puncturing. White trumps fragility, order the Vittorias in the the only color that matters in modern cycling.
Peasant, when you are ready to sell those Ksyriums in a few weeks, please let me know!
my ideal for next year (based on running fmb ssc's this year...at times) would be a fmb ssc or similar up front...something with a decent amount of tread for good grip and cornering in turns. out back i would like a file tread type tyre like the new challenge ir pipistrello or fmb file with a row of side knobs for some traction, but not to much. i think this would be good for the fast and dry NE courses. 34mm up front, 32 in the back. what do I know though. super ideal would be to have 2 or 4 sets of tubbies for different conditions. but i think something like i described above would work well for about 85% of what we race on. that said, i race on 32mm ssc front and rear and don't really plan on changing that for next year at the moment. some of that is a function of $$, and some is a function of the fact they work just fine.
and yash, do you know if the cyclocrossworld team has any more wheels to unload? if so, email me their contact info per favor?
Mike, I think the guy I bought these from has one more pair, although I took the ones that had the Smooth bearings.
Excellent choices on the tires Josh.
I will be using a set of 34mm FMB SSC's for most of the races that have a bit of roughness to them, like Amesbury. I plan to have a set of the smooth tread stuff for races like Gloucester, glued to the Ksyriums.
I want to do really well in the small races like Bedford and Ommegang CX this year.
